Course Description: A continued study of financial accounting (ACCT& 201). Topics include accounting for plant assets, debt and equity securities, current and long-term liabilities, payroll, stocks, Statement of Cash Flows, and financial statement analysis. Required for business majors transferring to 4-year business programs.
Prerequisite: ACCT& 201 with a C or higher. Meets FQE Requirement: No Elective Requirements: Fulfills Academic Electives Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Record transactions for the purchase, allocation of depreciation, and disposal of long-lived assets.
- Record investment transactions for both debt and equity securities.
- Journalize transactions for incurring and paying current and long-term liabilities.
- Record basic payroll transactions based on the calculation of employee earnings/withholdings and employer payroll taxes.
- Record transactions involving stockholders’ equity accounts.
- Prepare the Statement of Cash Flows.
- Evaluate business performance using financial statement analysis techniques.
Course Contents
- Accounting for the cost of property, plant, and equipment from purchase through disposal including the calculation of depreciation using common depreciation methods
- Accounting for natural resources and their depletion and intangible assets and their amortization
- Procedures for reporting current liabilities including determinable, estimated, and contingent liabilities
- Procedures for calculating and recording payroll transactions
- Accounting procedures for reporting debt and equity security investments
- Accounting for long-term liabilities such as notes payable, mortgages payable, and bonds payable including the calculation of interest
- Transactions impacting stockholders’ equity accounts including issuing stock, buying and selling treasury stock, and issuing cash and stock dividends
- Identification of operating, investing, and financing activities used to prepare the Statement of Cash Flows
- Financial statement analysis techniques including horizontal, vertical, trend, and ratio analysis
- The use of special accounting journals and subsidiary ledgers to record transactions
- Ethics in accounting
