Course Description: An intensive course for English language learners with an emphasis on paragraph structure, academic vocabulary development, grammar skills, and reading strategies that will prepare students for Connect III.
Prerequisite: Appropriate placement test score; C or higher in Connect I, or instructor permission. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Produce well-developed paragraphs that include a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
- Write a variety of sentence types including simple and compound sentences.
- Write one-paragraph responses to readings that make connections to personal experience.
- Use simple and progressive verb tenses to write about past, present, or future events.
- Identify parts of speech
- Use level-appropriate vocabulary in writing assignments.
- Use subject verb agreement within written sentences.
- Revise paragraphs through peer revision, tutor visits, or instructor feedback.
- Use MLA (or APA) document formatting for all formal written assignments.
- Read texts using appropriate reading strategies or Reading Apprenticeship Routines from Reading for Understanding by Schoenbach, Greenleaf, and Murphy (2012).
- Communicate how power, privilege, equity, and empathy affect our daily lives by engaging with culturally and linguistically diverse texts and media.
