Course Description: Learn about Electronic Medical Records (EMR), bookkeeping and basic accounting in today’s medical office. Covers appointment scheduling, telephone practices, processing mail, downloading/uploading electronic medical records information, inventory, office insurance, ordering and maintenance of office equipment and supplies; banking, payroll, credit and collection; organizing a procedure manual, time-management techniques, and cultural differences concerning perception of time and expectation.
Prerequisite: AHE 101 with a C or higher or concurrent enrollment. Strongly Recommended: Special Requirements:

Student Learning Outcomes
- Use and learn about Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Orient patients to office policies and procedures.
- Exercise efficient time management. Perform the scheduling and monitoring of appointments.
- Establish and maintain the patient’s medical records. Demonstrate proper telephone techniques.
- Document appropriately. Perform an inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Identify and respond to issues of confidentiality. Evaluate and recommend equipment and supplies for a medical office.
- Operate and maintain facilities and equipment safely and maintain the physical plant.
- Compose written communication using correct grammar, spelling, and format. State the procedures for processing mail.
- Utilize computer software for selected procedures and office insurance. Understand cultural differences concerning perception of time and expectations.
- Explain general office policies.
- Perform basic office practice management activities including credit and collection, banking and payroll, and financial forms and records.

- Contents of a patient’s chart; knowledge of the components and types of medical records.
- Knowledge of the methods of collecting and correcting information, purging or retaining medical records.
- Initiating or terminating medical treatment procedures. Appropriate guidelines for releasing records of information.
- Procedure manuals; principles and procedures of time management. Office supplies and equipment and routine maintenance of equipment.
- Types of business insurance for the medical office. Providing comfortable surroundings and arranging for housekeeping.
- Developing skills in the knowledge and use of telephones. Using proper telephone triage technique.
- Receiving, organizing, prioritizing and transmitting information. Letters, memos, messages, reports, facsimiles, photocopying.
- Filing systems, process and equipment. Procedures and processes for preparing and processing mail.
- Guidelines for storage, protection, transfer, retention and destruction of files.
- Inventory methods. Office insurance.
- Cultural differences concerning perception of time, expectation, and finances.
