AHE 133 - Pharmacy Records Management

Course Description: Purchasing pharmaceuticals, devices and supplies, including acquisition in emergency situations. Controlling inventory of medications, equipment, and devices according to an established plan. Introduction to the concept of troubleshooting, maintenance and repairing pharmacy equipment, devices and facilities. Use of various forms of technology for storing, accessing and recording pharmacy data. Includes specialized terminology, filing rules and systems, paper-based and electronic files management, records security, ethical concerns with emphasis on pharmaceutical practical records and applications; regulations regarding tracking and tracing drug shipments.

Prerequisite: AHE 130 and AHE 131 and AHE 132 with a C or higher.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Describe process of obtaining pharmaceutical supplies, maintaining records of procurement, and inventory control and management using “track and trace.”
  2. Explain legal requirements pursuant to maintaining records, both electronic and paper-based.
  3. Describe various means of managing inventory effectively.
  4. Process prescription/medication orders utilizing learned pharmacy abbreviations and terminology.
  5. Describe the process of “track and trace.”
  6. Describe each step of the Rx dispensing process in the community pharmacy setting.
  7. Demonstrate ability to accurately collect, organize and evaluate information contained in a patient profile/medical record.
  8. Accurately screen and interpret a prescription, prepare medications for dispensing, and correctly bill insurance and other third party sources of payment for services.
