ART 107 - Life Drawing

Course Description: A studio course in which students are introduced to observing and drawing the human form. Using discussion and analysis students will be directed in both traditional and nontraditional use of the figure in drawing.

Prerequisite: Grade of 2.0 or higher in ENGL 097, or AESL 098, or appropriate test score.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Appreciate the stylistic and technical development of drawing the human form in the visual arts.
  2. Observe and draw the human form in both formal and informal compositions.
  3. Employ a variety of techniques to draw the human form using but not limited to both wet and dry media techniques.
  4. Critically analyze their drawings using the vocabulary of the discipline.

Course Contents
  1. Using lectures, videos, guest lectures and gallery and/or museum visits students will examine the ways artists have responded to the human form in drawing.  
  2. Using a model for studio drawing exercises, students will develop observational techniques for drawing the human form in both formal and informal compositions.
  3. Using studio exercises students will practice working with wet and dry media including (but not limited to) pencil, charcoal, pastel ink and other water based media.
  4. Using notebooks, group work, self assessments and/or formal critique sessions students will analyze drawings using the vocabulary of the discipline.
