Course Description: An introduction and exploration of the relationship between historic world events and the visual arts from 1850 to the present.

Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 with a D or higher or concurrent enrollment.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Students will identify historical influences on the development of artworks from 1850-present.
  2. Students will identify artists and or artistic movements, subject matter and themes expressed in artworks of the period.
  3. Students will analyze works of art using the vocabulary of the discipline.
  4. Students will correlate a relationship between individual experience, history and artistic development.

Course Contents
  1. Using lectures, texts, artist’s autobiographies, videos, guest lectures and gallery and/or museum visits students will be introduced to the relationship of world events and art works dating from 1850 to the present.
  2. Using research and writing in essays and/or exams, students will identify major artists and/or art movements, subject matter and themes that developed from 1850 to the present.
  3. Using group and/or individual projects and short writing assignments and/or essays and studio projects, students will analyze and compare art from 1850 to the present.
  4. Using groupwork, group presentations or essays students will correlate a relationship between individual experience, history and artistic development.
