AT 133 - Automotive Electrical II

Course Description: Operation, diagnosis and repair of automotive electrical systems including advanced lighting, power controlled systems, sensors, actuators, modules, and vehicle networking. Use of scan tools, lab scopes, power probes and other electrical diagnostic equipment included. Navigation of wiring diagrams and troubleshooting techniques will be discussed.

Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in AT 101 and AT 121.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate understanding of automotive electrical systems service hazards and safety by conducting safe practices while working in the lab.
  2. Demonstrate proper use of electrical testing equipment by performing live-vehicle tests.
  3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of a variety of electrical circuits by tracing power flow and explaining circuit operation.
  4. Demonstrate ability to diagnose a variety of electrical faults on a variety of electrical systems correctly by performing live-vehicle testing.
  5. Demonstrate ability to use a flow chart to diagnose vehicle electrical faults by following systematic process.
  6. Demonstrate ability to repair vehicle wiring and connections to professional industry standards by performing live-vehicle repairs.
  7. Demonstrate advanced ability to access and read wiring diagrams by properly identifying electrical symbols, components, wires and circuit power flow.
  8. Demonstrate ability to use a scan tool for electrical diagnosis by properly reading codes, accessing data stream, using bi-directional test when available, and clearing codes.
  9. Demonstrate ability to use a lab scope for electrical diagnosis by properly connecting, recording and interpreting signals from a variety of electrical circuits.

  3. Operation, diagnosis and repair of exterior lighting systems.
  4. Operation, diagnosis and repair of interior lighting systems.
  5. Operation, diagnosis and repair of gauges, instrumentation, and warning lamp circuits.
  6. Operation, diagnosis and repair of horn, wiper and other relay controlled circuits.
  7. Operation, diagnosis and repair of power windows, seats, mirrors, etc.
  8. Operation, diagnosis and repair of module controlled circuits.
  9. Operation, diagnosis and repair of cruise control and automatic temperature control.
  10. Operation, diagnosis and repair of supplementary restraint systems including air bags, pre-tensioners, etc.
  11. Operation, diagnosis and repair of vehicle networking.
  12. Using a scan tool & lab scope for electrical diagnosis.
  13. Fundamentals of automotive computer operation including, inputs, outputs, memory storage, multiplexing and reprogramming.
