Course Description: Operation, diagnosis, service and repair of engine computer control systems with emphasis on ignition systems, engine mechanical condition, and engine sensors. Use of scan tools, lab scopes, and other specialty test equipment included.
Prerequisite: AT 205 with a D grade or higher; and concurrent enrollment in AT 212 and CMST& 210. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Conduct safe practices around automotive ignition systems and computer control service hazards while working in the lab.
- Correctly identify and explain ignition system and computer control systems and their operation.
- Diagnose engine mechanical conditions and problems on live vehicles.
- Diagnose a variety of ignition systems problems on live vehicles.
- Perform an ignition system tune-up by following systematic processes on live vehicles.
- Accurately diagnose a variety of ignition systems by using a lab scope and properly connecting, recording, and interpreting lab scope patterns.
- Correctly understand scan tool modes and their functions by accessing and interpreting data on a variety of live vehicles.
- Demonstrate an understanding of vehicle module programming and correctly prepare a vehicle for and/or perform a re-flash.
- PROGRAM OUTCOME: Correctly Test, diagnose, and verify vehicle mechanical and electrical systems.

- Fundamentals of ignition systems.

- On-board diagnosis using scan tools and lab scopes.
- Module pass-through reprogramming.
- Diagnosis and testing of temperature and throttle position sensors.
- Symptom-based diagnosis.
