Course Description: Introduction to the organisms in the sea with special emphasis on intertidal life of our area. Non-major, general interest. Field trip required.

Student Learning Outcomes

Identify the common tide pool organisims of Puget Sound and recognize the ecological relationships amoung marine organisms and their physical environment.

Course Contents

The classification of the living world with special consideration of marine organisms.
General characteristics of the phyla and classes as represented in the ocean.
Acquaintance with the common sea weeds and animals of the Pacific Northwest seashore.
Introduction to the effects of tides and currents on marine organisms.
General overview of the marine plankton. A laboratory experience in the recognition of common organisms.
The process of photosynthesis and its relationship to the oceanic food web.
An introduction to the physiology of organisms as it pertains to environmental ecology.
Consideration of cultural perspectives on the marine organisms used by humans.
