Course Description: Introduction to soil science including physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils, soil-water interactions, soil management and conservation, and lab and field methods in soil science.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Classify and describe soils common to the Pacific Northwest based on soil formation factors.
- Describe and quantify soil physical properties, soil chemical properties, and soil interactions with water.
- Apply knowledge of soil physical, chemical, and biological properties to formulate management strategies that promote and restore long term soil health and conservation.
- Identify natural resource management agencies and organizations that contribute to knowledge of soil science, soil management, and soil conservation.
Course Contents
- Physical, chemical, and biological properties and processes to assess soil quality while using appropriate tools, techniques, and technologies.
- Soils common to the Pacific Northwest based on geology, topography, climate, organisms, and the influence of time on their formation.
- Function and significance of biotic activity on soil development, fertility, and ecosystem conservation.
- Impact of land use management practices on soil quality and quantity, and recommend plans for restoring and enhancing the productivity of degraded urban, agricultural, wetland, and forest soils.
- Relationships between soil health, plant vigor, agricultural productivity, human nutrition, and the stability of human societies.
