Course Description: ELA Level 1 (Beginning ELA Literacy) Students improve English listening, speaking, reading, writing and comprehension with a goal to develop college and career readiness skills.
Prerequisite: None. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Write a minimum of three basic declarative sentences using basic capitalization rules and correct end-of-sentence punctuation.
- Use basic keyboarding techniques to type one basic declarative sentence.
- Recognize and write the alphabet in upper and lower case.
- Demonstrate through reading, writing, speaking and listening one-to-one letter correspondences for frequent sounds of each consonant; long and short vowel sounds; and common consonant digraphs.
- Decode two syllable words and sight read common high-frequency words.
- Spell simple words phonetically.
- Sort words into categories that represent common characteristics.
- Pronounce simple rhyming words and single syllable words; add or substitute individual sounds in simple one syllable words to make new words.
- Follow agreed upon rules for class discussion asking and answering basic questions to seek help, get information, or clarify.
- Demonstrate aural comprehension and speaking skills by sharing personal information with limited prompts.
- Use reading strategies while reading out loud from an appropriate level text; ask and answer basic questions about key details; use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding.
- Use illustrations, graphs and details in a text to describe key ideas and to gain pre-reading information about content.
- Identify basic similarities and differences between two basic texts on the same topic.
- Understand and use vocabulary related to numeracy, ordinal and cardinal numbers, comparisons, and simple math functions and concepts.
