Course Description: ELA Level 4 (High Intermediate ESL). Students improve English listening, speaking, reading, and writing and comprehension with a goal to develop college and career readiness skills.
Prerequisite: ELA 013 with a P (or placement into ELA 014). Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Communicate in writing and revise based on feedback using the appropriate components the following: A narrative with sequenced events using transition signals. A descriptive paragraph. A structured summary paragraph including topic sentence, supporting details, and concluding sentence.
- Determine the meaning of general and content specific works and phrases in a text relevant to a specific topic.
- Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
- Ask and answer questions (who, what, when, where, why, how) to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
- Use information from illustrations (maps, photographs, graphs, etc) to demonstrate understanding of the text and to support the main idea.
- Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes and decode words with common Latin suffixes.
- Identify nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in general and their functions in particular sentences.
- Form and use simple verb tenses (past, present and future) of regular verbs and the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs.
- Apply the conventions of spelling including capitalization of holidays, product names, and geographic names.
- Consult reference materials including print and online dictionaries to correct and check spelling and determine word meaning.
- Apply reading strategies to effectively read out loud from a level-appropriate text.
- Analyze and discuss level-appropriate text including asking questions, responding to discourse, and expanding on comments of others.
- Demonstrate ability to take written notes on an audio /video recording or oral presentation.
- Apply English language skills and knowledge to understanding basic math problems and interpreting graphs and data.
- Demonstrate basic computer skills needed for CANVAS access, completion of course assignments, communication, basic internet research, and presentations with visual components.
