Course Description: ELA Level 5 (Low Advanced ELA). Students improve English listening, speaking, reading, and writing and comprehension with a goal to develop college and career readiness skills. Prepares students for transition to On Ramp.
Prerequisite: ELA 014 with a P (or placement into ELA 015). Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Apply standard conventions of English to a structured opinion paragraph supported by evidence; a structured explanatory paragraph; and a short report from notes.
- Write opinion pieces on topics supporting a point of view with reasons and evidence.
- Read out loud level appropriate prose with expression on successive readings. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding.
- Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words, choosing flexibly from an array of reading strategies including using sentence level context and knowledge of root words.
- Demonstrate understanding of word relationships including literal and figurative meanings; real life connections between the word and its use; and shades of meaning among related and nuanced words.
- Accurately and effectively communicate orally using level-appropriate conversational words and phrases including those that signal space and time relationships.
- Analyze and discuss level-appropriate text(s) containing illustrations, graphs and/or data.
- Apply Reading Apprenticeship strategies to understanding academic texts and describe the relationship between ideas.
- Explain ideas, opinions, and understandings respectively while collaborating with classmates representing diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.
- Know and use various text features such as: Captions, bold print, sub-headings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus or icons to locate key facts or information in a text.
- Compare and contrast important points presented in two texts on the same topic.
- Apply English language to understanding and solving of simple math problems.
- Apply computer competencies to effective use of CANVAS; communication; sending attachments; internet searches to locate information on a given topic; and create presentations.
