Course Description: ELA students with clearly defined academic goals will take an intensive course for English language learners with an emphasis on communication skills that will prepare students for ELA 65.
Prerequisite: CASAS and CaMLA testing and permission of ELA and EAP department chairs. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Speak for understanding by focusing on English for everyday communication.
- Demonstrate ability to pronounce and distinguish basic vowel and consonant sounds; basic syllables; word stress; minimal pairs; linking words; word endings; thought groups; and reductions.
- Present topics and new vocabulary using select media such as Microsoft PowerPoint and/or videos.
- Take notes on presentations, lectures, and videos.
- Effectively ask conversational questions.
- Effectively ask content questions about presentations, lectures, and class discussions.
- Engage in an experiential learning project such as the International Music Collective radio show and/or the Conversation Partner Program.
- Demonstrate global citizenship, critical thinking, and metacognition.
