Course Description: ELA students with clearly defined academic goals will take an intensive course for English language learners with an emphasis on paragraph structure, academic vocabulary development, grammar skills, and reading strategies that will prepare students for ELA 70.

Prerequisite: CASAS and CaMLA testing, B- (80%) or higher in ELA 50, and/or permission of ELA and EAP department chairs.

Student Learning Outcomes

Produce well-developed paragraphs that include a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
Write a variety of sentence types including simple and compound sentences.
Write one-paragraph summaries and one-paragraph responses to academic texts that demonstrate ability to use appropriate vocabulary, paraphrase main points, and make connections to personal experience.
Use simple and progressive verb tenses to write about past, present, or future events.
Use parts of speech with an emphasis on adjectives and adverbs; comparatives and superlatives; nouns as adjectives; possessive nouns; and expressions of quantity.
Use level-appropriate academic language in writing assignments.
Use subject verb agreement within written sentences and clauses.
Effectively revise and edit paragraphs through peer revision, or tutor visits, or instructor feedback.
Use MLA document formatting for all formal written assignments.
Read academic texts using appropriate reading strategies or Reading Apprenticeship Routines from Reading for Understanding by Schoenbach, Greenleaf, and Murphy (2012).
Demonstrate global citizenship, critical thinking, and metacognition.
