Course Description: ELA students with clearly defined academic goals who are preparing for academic and university transfer studies will take a semi-intensive course for English language learners with an emphasis on academic composition and grammar skills that will prepare students for ELA 98.

Prerequisite: CASAS and CaMLA testing, B- (80%) or higher in ELA 70, or permission of ELA and EAP department chairs.

Student Learning Outcomes

Write paraphrases and one-page summaries of academic texts.
Produce non-research-based but thesis-driven essays (maximum three pages) that include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Effectively write a variety of sentence types including simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
Effectively use simple, progressive, and perfect verb tenses to accurately write about past, present, or future events.
Use level-appropriate academic vocabulary and third person voice in essays and summaries.
Compose emails and online work that use academically appropriate tone and content.
Demonstrate competency using subject verb agreement within written sentences and clauses.
Effectively revise and edit writing drafts through peer revision, or tutor visits, or instructor feedback.
Use MLA document formatting for all formal written assignments.
Read academic texts using appropriate reading strategies or Reading Apprenticeship Routines from Reading for Understanding by Schoenbach, Greenleaf, and Murphy (2012).
Demonstrate global citizenship, critical thinking, and metacognition.
