Course Description: Preparation for initial assignment as a basic firefighter with a structural fire agency. Meets minimum training requirements of WAC 296-305 and NFPA Standard 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications. For students seeking Washington State Patrol, State Fire Marshal’s Office certification for Firefighter 1.

Prerequisite: CSS 103 with a D or higher or concurrent enrollment.

Student Learning Outcomes

Possess a working knowledge of the use, limitations and care of personal protective ensemble and self-contained breathing apparatus.
Extinguish incipient fires with an appropriate extinguisher.
Possess working knowledge of fire service ropes & knots and tie knots common to the fire service and hoist tools and equipment using the correct knot.
Conduct search and rescue in structures of various configurations and content.
Possess a thorough understanding of safety mandates and practices in the fire service and understand the Incident Management System and the concept of a personal accountability system.
Possess working knowledge of forcible entry tools and demonstrate proper forcible entry techniques through various structural membranes.
Possess working knowledge of fire service ladders and demonstrate adequate skills while carrying, positioning, raising, climbing and working from ladders.
Possess working knowledge of property conservation and perform different salvage cover throws, folds, and rolls and explain where to search buildings for hidden fires and how to look for structural stability.
Demonstrate an understanding of principles of ventilation and how to utilize various ventilation techniques using hand and power equipment.
Possess working knowledge of fire hose, deployment, and restoration and describe the effects of friction loss and elevation on fire streams and characteristics of various stream types and patterns.
Demonstrate attacking passenger vehicle, dumpster, and structure fires.
PROGRAM OUTCOME: Students will efficiently utilize tactical resources and effective methods of deployment in responding to a variety of emergency incidents.
