Course Description: Provides the basic skills necessary to safely and effectively manage the initial activities of an emergency involving the uncontrolled release of dangerous chemicals. Focuses on responding to and assessing the hazard involved, and making necessary notifications of hazardous material spills. For emergency pre-hospital care personnel, emergency communications officers, law enforcement officers, private industry employees, public works personnel, and Wildland firefighters.
Prerequisite: None. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Understand the potential outcomes associated with an emergency created when hazardous materials are present.
- Recognize the presence of hazardous materials in an emergency.
- Identify the hazardous materials, if possible.
- Understand the role of the first responder awareness individual in the employer’s emergency response plan including site security and control and the Emergency Response Guidebook.
- Realize the need for additional resources, and to make appropriate notifications to the communication center.
