Course Description: Relevant work experience through appointment to a fire protection agency. Augments classroom learning by applying skills and knowledge learned and opportunity to develop workplace ethics, appropriate performance levels, and behavioral traits in workplace settings.
Prerequisite: Instructor permission required. Completion of FIRE 120 with minimum C grade or Department Chair approval. Special Requirements: Must possess Firefighter 1 and Hazardous Materials First Responder, Operations certifications from the Washington State Fire Marshal.
Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Prepare a learning contract and setting goals in writing for workplace experience.
- Document the workplace learning experience by submitting regular work notes.
- Prepare a self-evaluation measuring work and learning against stated goals.
- Given various emergency situations and adequate equipment, demonstrate appropriate skill levels to mitigate harmful or destructive conditions occurring in the community.
- Given various situations where the student must make decisions of judgment, demonstrate a strong sense of ethics in problem solving and decision making.
- Perform all job functions at a level expected and communicated by his/her supervisor in carrying out duties as a firefighter.
- Understand the value and appearance of professional behavior and demonstrate such in the working environment.
- Understand the value of a professional development plan and gain insight into creating his/her own.
- PROGRAM OUTCOME: Students will possess a set of values and skills that demonstrate a high level of professionalism and ability to work in complex teams and organizations.
Course Contents
- Major topics are set by the student and the workplace supervisor during the writing of the learning contract. Topics usually focus on the host fire department’s needs and activities. Previous topics have included:
- Maintenance of apparatus, equipment and facilities.
- Personnel policies.
- Training and certification systems and requirements.
- Facility, apparatus and equipment response preparedness.
- Fire company interpersonal dynamics.
- Emergency response and operations.
- Public education and relations.
- Fire prevention functions.
- Cultural and interpersonal dynamics of the fire station.
