FIRE 211 - Fire Protection Systems

Course Description: Introduction to the concepts and principles of fire protection systems including fire extinguishers, automatic sprinkler systems, standpipes, fire detection and alarm systems, and special hazard systems.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify the components of automatic sprinkler systems.
  2. Describe the operation, inspection, testing, restoration, capabilities and limitations of wet-pipe, dry-pipe, deluge and pre-action sprinkler systems.
  3. Explain the process of designing a sprinkler system.
  4. Explain how residential systems differ from standard systems.
  5. Identify various types of fire pumps, pump drivers and pump controllers.
  6. Describe the inspection and testing process for fire pumps.
  7. Describe how various fire extinguishing systems work and the inspection and testing process for each.
  8. Identify the type of special system required for various protection uses.
  9. Identify the types of standpipe systems and the components of each.  
  10. Explain how standpipe systems should be inspected and tested.  
  11. List standards that affect standpipe system design.
  12. Identify how portable fire extinguishers should be placed, inspected, and tested.
  13. Describe detection and alarm system components and types of systems.  
  14. Explain how to inspect and test detection and alarm systems.
  15. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Students will understand how various work environments can affect development of hostile fire conditions.
