Course Description: Social, psychological, and physiological aspects of drug abuse and addictive disorders. Introduction to drug use behaviors and their impact on contemporary society. Foundational course for those who desire more knowledge regarding psychoactive drugs, drug-use behavior and the treatment systems currently available to assist those with drug related problems. Required course for both Human Services degrees (including fast track students).

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Chart the continuum of psychoactive substance use, abuse and addiction as identified by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
  2. Compare and contrast relapse and recovery.
  3. Compare and contrast drug use prevention programs and drug use intervention programs in Washington State.
  4. Describe the network of residential treatment options available for psychoactive substance abusers in the state of Washington.
  5. Describe the detoxification and outpatient treatment options available within their own community for psycho-active substance abusers.
