Course Description: Overview of the mutual impacts of substance use disorder treatment and the legal system on each other. Guidelines and laws which affect case management and the structures and functions of courts as they affect addiction treatment. Federal and state confidentiality law. Required course for students seeking the Substance Use Disorder Counseling degree (including fast track students).
Prerequisite: None. Meets FQE Requirement: No Elective Requirements: Fulfills Gray Area Electives Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) for those who receive Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charges.
- Explain how the U.S. Constitution balances personal liberty and public safety.
- Identify the primary laws (state and federal) that define patient confidentiality in the substance use disorder treatment industry.
- Identify each of the five pieces of information that can be shared when reporting suspected child or elder abuse.
- Identify each step of the process in a substance use related legal proceeding from arrest through trial and sentencing.
Course Contents
