HSERV 198 - Pre-Practicum Seminar

Course Description: Designed to prepare students for successful participation in community-based fieldwork and to provide needed information and skills that will allow the student to identify and secure a field-placement appropriate to the student’s needs, interests, and abilities in subsequent academic quarters. In addition to developing a working understanding of the necessary tasks and paperwork required in a field placement experience, this course will focus on a review of (1) agency and employer needs, (2) effective workplace communication, and (3) self-awareness in the workplace. Presents information on state credentialing, an introduction to ethics, and the development of a practicum site. (Not required for fast-track students).

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Describe a wide variety of community agencies that serve as practicum sites for Human Service students.
  2. Complete all required practicum paperwork independently.
  3. Complete a resume, cover letter, and/or thank you letter.
  4. Complete a minimum of one informational interview with a community agency.
  5. Discuss the Washington State credentialing process for persons working in human services.
  6. Review different areas of human service practice by examining case examples and developing written professional conduct responses.
