Course Description: Alcoholism and other disorders as a family disease; effects of role disturbance, boundary violations, and communication disruptions on children, spouse, and family systems; therapeutic interventions for families. Development of a multicultural perspective in working with families and within communities. Required course for students seeking the Substance Use Disorder Counseling track (including fast track students).
Prerequisite: None. Meets FQE Requirement: No Elective Requirements: Fulfills Gray Area Electives Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify the variety of roles that family members may adopt in order to accommodate the presence of a family member with an active addiction.
- Identify the unwritten rules that families often live by to accommodate the presence of a family member with an active addiction.
- Articulate cultural factors which influence a family’s relational dynamics.
- List a minimum of ten important reasons for offering family counseling within a substance use treatment program.
- Compare and contrast family counseling and family therapy based on the Substance Use Disorder Professional (SUDPT) Scope of Practice. (RCW 18.205.20).
