MT 133 - Marine Electrical Systems II

Course Description: Marine AC electrical systems, shore power systems, inverter systems, wind and solar charging systems, gen-sets and marine corrosion issues. Preparation for ABYC Marine Electrical Technician Certification.

Prerequisite: MT 132 with a D or higher.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for connections of shore power cords to dock power pylons and hull inlet connectors.
  2. Install and wire typical vessel AC electrical system components including charging, inverter, distribution panels, duplex receptacles, lights and auxiliary systems to American Boat and Yacht Council and National Fire Protection Association guidelines and recommended practices.
  3. Complete a galvanic corrosion survey on a vessel and recommend corrective or maintenance items necessary for corrosion control. 
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the function and testing of galvanic isolators, isolation transformers, and reverse polarity indicators.  
  5. Demonstrate safe work best practice when working on alternating current circuits by being aware of shock hazards, proper multi-meter use, and not touching energized wires or terminals.
  6. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Demonstrate Mechanic & Electrical Skills.
  7. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Develop knowledge & proficiency to pass certification exams.

Course Contents
  1. Alternator and AC battery charging options, installation and monitoring of system functions.
  2. Alternator modification to support external voltage regulators, multi-step voltage regulation.
  3. Engine driven AC generator functions, frequency measurement and adjustment.
  4. Connections of shore power cords to dock power pylons and hull inlet connectors.
  5. Charging systems in accordance with ABYC guidelines.
  6. Regulated alternators for external voltage regulation operation.
  7. Battery monitoring systems.
  8. AC charging and inverter operation and installation.
  9. Output frequency of an on-board engine driven generator.
  10. Battery banks sizing calculations and battery bank installation requirements, battery construction choices, and ABYC installation guidelines.
  11. Galvanic corrosion survey. 
  12. Galvanic isolators, isolation transformers, and reverse polarity indicators.
  13. Preparation for ABYC Marine Electrical Certification.
