MT 160 - Marine Engine Systems I

Course Description: Introduction to inboard gas and diesel engines in recreational and small commercial marine vessels. Includes theory, operation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting techniques of traditional and modern marine engine systems. Utilizes industry standards and recommended practices as promoted by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). Preparation for passing the ABYC Marine Gasoline and/or Marine Diesel engine certifications examination is stressed.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the operation and theory of marine engine systems by passing the final exam with a competency of at least 70%.
  2. Identify the internal and external components of marine engines and explain their purpose and function.
  3. Perform maintenance and repair procedures on marine engine fuel, cooling, exhaust, and lubrication systems in accordance with manufacturer and industry standards.
  4. Troubleshoot and repair electrical system problems on the engine starting and charging circuits using a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM).  
  5. Perform engine winterization and spring commissioning tasks in accordance with manufacturer procedures.  
  6. Demonstrate the ability to access and interpret technical information, using service manuals and online sources, for use in engine testing, diagnosis, and repair.  
  7. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Demonstrate Mechanic & Electrical Skills.
  8. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Develop knowledge & profiency to pass certification exams.

Course Contents
  1. Fundamentals of marine inboard engine operation and theory, including 2-stroke and 4-stroke comparisons, engine parts identification and function, and engine design types.
  2. Gas and diesel fuel delivery system components, operation, service, and safety.
  3. Cooling system design, operation, and service for raw water and freshwater cooling circuits.
  4. Lubrication system service and basic maintenance.
  5. Exhaust and air intake system components, operation, and service.
  6. Engine electrical system fundamentals and troubleshooting, including starter circuits, charging circuits, battery banks, engine monitoring, and gasoline ignition systems.
  7. Engine winterization and spring commissioning procedures.
