MUSC 187 - Drums-Intermediate

Course Description: Applied music instruction. Individual instruction in voice or instrument for music majors only which focuses on the practical application of musical principles to performance. Must be concurrently enrolled in one of the following: MUSC& 141, 142, 143 or 241, 242, 243. May also be taken by non-music majors depending on circumstance. No more than 1 credit per quarter to a maximum of 6 credits.

Prerequisite: Music Dept. Chair permission required. Audition may be required.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Student’s ability to perform will be enhanced.
  2. Students will have knowledge of his/her instrument and the techniques needed to master performance.
  3. Students will become familiar with various musical styles and genres as they apply to his/her level of ability.
  4. Reading skills will improve through understanding and performance of complex rhythmic patterns, time signatures and dynamic levels.

Course Contents
  1. Music literature appropriate to the student’s playing ability.
  2. Specific study in performance technique as it applies to the instrument.
  3. Rudimentary understanding of chart reading as it applies to the instrument.
  4. Study of proper hand technique by way of double stroke rolls, the standard rudiments, and other sticking patterns.
  5. Understanding of four-way coordination in rock, jazz, and Latin styles.
  6. Performance in student recitals encouraged.
