Course Description: Beginning tennis is designed for students who desire formal instruction in tennis and/or those who cannot perform the basic strokes well enough to enjoy a baseline game. The basic skills and techniques for singles and doubles will be presented with emphasis on the forehand drive, backhand drive, basic volley and serve.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Perform the four basic strokes: forehand drive; backhand drive; serve; volley.
  2. Play singles and doubles matches with and against players of diverse skills and strategies. Showing knowledge of basic rules, strategy and technique.
  3. Incorporate the cultural history of the game of tennis.

Course Contents
  1. Values (emphasis on carry over activity for recreation play and connecting with players of different cultures and diverse skill levels through play).
  2. Tennis etiquette and sportsmanship.
  3. Equipment and facilities.
  4. Rules of lawn tennis.
  5. Score keeping may be done in different languages, based on the class diversity.
  6. Court markings.
  7. Beginning strategy of singles and doubles.
  8. Footwork.
  9. Practice and analysis of the four basic strokes: forehand drive; backhand drive; serve (emphasis on “”second serve”“) - slice service; volley.
