Course Description: This course is designed to meet the needs of the students preparing themselves for a job in the fire department. Twice a week the students will be in an active setting, preparing them to meet the job performance testing requirements. One hour a week this course addresses issue of physiological and psychological well-being. Topics to be discussed include nutrition principals, fitness parameters and stress management. Techniques are presented to help the students incorporate a total health and fitness program into their lifestyle. Course fulfills PE 100 requirement.
Prerequisite: Students must be enrolled in the Fire Protection Tech program. Meets FQE Requirement: No PE Requirement: Activity PE Elective Requirements: Fulfills Gray Area Electives Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate improved strength.
- Demonstrate knowledge of stretching each muscle group.
- Demonstrate ability to design complete fitness program.
- Perform job related physical skill assessments similar to what will be required upon application for employment. Apply appropriate safety precautions.
Course Contents
- Target heart rate calculation, monitoring and tracking.
- Designing a balanced fitness program including cardiovascular and strength training components.
- Physically perform series of simulated job scene physical activities.
- Basic nutrition principles.
- Proper training methods.
- Understand and achieve established minimum physical ability levels as they relate to job performance.
