PE 161 - Fire Fighter Fitness and Wellness

Course Description: This course is designed to meet the needs of the students preparing themselves for a job in the fire department. Twice a week the students will be in an active setting, preparing them to meet the job performance testing requirements. One hour a week this course addresses issue of physiological and psychological well-being. Topics to be discussed include nutrition principals, fitness parameters and stress management. Techniques are presented to help the students incorporate a total health and fitness program into their lifestyle. Course fulfills PE 100 requirement.

Prerequisite: Students must be enrolled in the Fire Protection Tech program.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate improved strength.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of stretching each muscle group.
  3. Demonstrate ability to design complete fitness program.
  4. Perform job related physical skill assessments similar to what will be required upon application for employment.  Apply appropriate safety precautions.

Course Contents
  1. Target heart rate calculation, monitoring and tracking.
  2. Designing a balanced fitness program including cardiovascular and strength training components.
  3. Physically perform series of simulated job scene physical activities.
  4. Basic nutrition principles.
  5. Proper training methods.
  6. Understand and achieve established minimum physical ability levels as they relate to job performance.
