Course Description: A study of the fundamental questions of philosophy, including human nature, ethics, justice, political theory, and the nature of knowledge.

Prerequisite: ENGL 099 with a C or higher (or placement into ENGL& 101).

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify and discuss the fields of philosophy, including metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and social philosophy.
  2. Use philosophic language in critical analysis.
  3. Become familiar with texts, and resources associated with philosophy.

  2. The fields of philosophy.
  3. Descartes and the foundations for knowledge.
  4. Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and its social, political and economic applications to our lived experiences.
  5. Aristotle on knowledge, concept formation, and ethics.
  6. Marx and social philosophy.
  7. Kant’s metaphysics.
  8. Philosophy of race and gender.
