Course Description: A proficiency-based course in Spanish, which includes pronunciation, fundamentals of grammar, syntax, oral and written exercises, reading and conversation; taught with varied foreign language teaching methods. An appreciation for cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries is emphasized. Oral practice is encouraged. For students who have not previously studied Spanish or for those who need a refresher course.

Prerequisite: Grade of 2.0 or higher in ENGL 097, or AESL 098, or appropriate test score.

Student Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate mastery of the Spanish sound system. Understand spoken Spanish intended for this level, regarding topics related to daily life. Speak in simple sentences about familiar topics in the present tense.
Demonstrate some reading skills within the confines of early vocabulary and develop reading strategies.
Sustain a simple conversation within vocabulary limitations. Emphasis is not on speaking in 101, but some oral skills will begin to emerge with student use of short appropriate answers, showing comprehension of oral or written material.
Demonstrate an understanding of some of the cultural differences among Spanish speaking countries as well as some of the creative and philosophical contributions of Spanish speaking people. Behave appropriately in social situations.
Demonstrate a significant understanding of Spanish and Latin American cultural traits.
Demonstrate understanding and empathetic respect for the multiple races, social classes, and varied backgrounds of people from Spain and Latin America.
Understand the historical, social, and political influences on the cultural questions raised while they are acquiring the Spanish language.
Demonstrate the ability to use language and behaviors that are appropriate in social situations with native speakers, either in class or with Hispanic people in the community.

Course Contents

Pronunciation: vowels, consonants, diphthongs, accents, phrases, sentences and intonation.
Grammar:  articles, gender and number of nouns & articles, gender agreement of adjectives, possessive adjectives, subject pronouns, regular and irregular present tense verb conjugations, & interrogative and negative structures.
Culture: proper use of the formal and familiar you, the use of señor, señora, señorita, don, doña, the high value of family and personal relationships and the low value of time. A specific Spanish-speaking country is highlighted with each chapter.
Vocabulary: basic beginning words and phrases.
Oral Proficiency: ability to use the vocabulary and language structures in conversation.
