WT 112 - Introduction to Wirefeed Welding

Course Description: Basic Wirefeed Welding theory of operation and safety requirements. Covers Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) processes, shielding gas selection, and electrode selection based on the AWS electrode classification system. Safety procedures are also covered. Includes an introduction to hands-on welding techniques in the shop setting.

Prerequisite: WT 111 and WT 114 and WT 211 with a D or higher.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Understand the theories of operation and the equipment used in the GMAW and FCAW wirefeed welding processes.
  2. Demonstrate correct use of wirefeed welding equipment, and safety practices.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the AWS electrode classification system.
  4. Demonstrate correct shop procedures (safety, housekeeping, equipment).
  5. Demonstrate manual techniques for making welds using the GMAW and FCAW process.
  6. Demonstrate use of proper welding-related terminology as applied to wirefeed welding processes.
  7. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Demonstrate safe and healthy of welding practices.

Course Contents
  1. GMAW and FCAW equipment setup and principles of operation. 
  2. Correct use of wirefeed welding equipment, and safety practices.
  3. AWS electrode classification system.
  4. Correct shop procedures (safety, housekeeping, equipment).
  5. Manual techniques for making welds using the GMAW and FCAW process.
  6. Proper welding-related terminology as applied to wirefeed welding processes.
