Course Description: Introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Welding of structural steel plate in the flat position using E6010 and E7018 electrodes with emphasis on shop safety.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify hazards associated with SMAW welding of steel.
- Work safely in the weld shop environment.
- Describe SMAW operating principles.
- Select electrode type for a given application.
- Setup and safely operate SMAW equipment.
- Make flat and horizontal welds using E6010 and E7018 electrodes.
- Use the AWS electrode identification system.
