Course Description: Introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Welding of structural steel plate in the flat position using E6010 and E7018 electrodes with emphasis on shop safety.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify hazards associated with SMAW welding of steel.
  2. Work safely in the weld shop environment.
  3. Describe SMAW operating principles.
  4. Select electrode type for a given application.
  5. Setup and safely operate SMAW equipment.
  6. Make flat and horizontal welds using E6010 and E7018 electrodes.
  7. Use the AWS electrode identification system.
