Course Description: A communication course in beginning intermediate French. Increases proficiency through review and expansion of skills, grammar, and cultural foundation of the language. Emphasizes oral communication.

Prerequisite: FRCH& 123 with a C or higher or successful completion of two years of high school French.

Demonstrate a significant understanding of cultural traits of France and French-speaking countries in the world.
Sustain more complicated conversation within fourth-quarter vocabulary limitations and respond appropriately, showing comprehension of oral and/or written material.
Develop empathetic respect for multiple races, social classes, and varied backgrounds of people from cultures different from his/her own.
Increasingly demonstrate mastery of the French sound system/pronunciation and read intermediate French and be able to interpret it correctly without word-for-word English translation.
Construct grammatically correct sentences orally or in written French.
Increasingly demonstrate an understanding of some the cultural differences among French speakers in different regions of France and/or French-speaking countries of the world, as well as some of the ways that we can enrich our own culture by recognizing creative and philosophical contributions of French-speaking people.

Increasingly demonstrate that s/he has learned language structures and behaviors that are appropriate in social situations with native speakers as exercises in class, oral interviews, skits, as well as monologues and dialogues.

Course Contents

Vocabulary: review of first year, health, medical, emergencies, shopping, bargaining, prices, popular sayings, family friends, weddings.
Grammar: expressing “become, get”, indirect object pronouns with commands and the present subjunctive, narrations of past experiences: the present perfect, imperfect, and passé compose, adjectives used as nouns, demonstrative pronouns. Possessive pronouns, indirect and direct object pronouns together, direct commands, (polite and informal), the subjunctive mood, making suggestions (let??s) reciprocal pronouns, the future, and the conditional.
In-depth discussion of cultural differences among French speakers: France and Canada.
