Course Description: This course covers skills and knowledge needed to effectively use technology for college and career success.
Prerequisite: CCB/ELA 24 with a C or higher (or instructor permission). Strongly Recommended: Be able to communicate through the MySVC email account and use basic features in text editors. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Extract and analyze information from various online sources, including social media, while accurately distinguishing between credible and unreliable or misleading sources.
- Manage files and folders in cloud storage using techniques such as creating, formatting, saving, moving, copying, searching, and backing up.
- Use learning management systems to accomplish tasks such as submitting assignments, participating in discussions, completing quizzes, managing schedules with the calendar function, communicating through the messaging system, and regularly monitoring academic progress through grade checking.
- Use fundamental tools within text editors and presentation applications to create visually compelling presentations.
- Identify suitable scenarios for the use of AI-generated information and articulate the associated advantages and potential risks.
Course Contents
- Identifying common internet and social media terms.
- Using web browsers and popular search engines to efficiently locate and retrieve information from the internet.
- Identifying and differentiating between trustworthy sources and unreliable or misleading sources of information on the internet and social media.
- Managing files and folders in local and cloud storages, such as Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive, by using appropriate file management techniques, such as creating, saving, moving, copying, searching, and backing up.
- Navigating and using e-learning tools available through a learning management system, such Canvas.
- Navigating and using features available through a popular video conferencing tool, such as Zoom, for effective communication and collaboration.
- Using basic tools in text editors, such as Google Docs and Microsoft Word, and presentation creators, such as Google Slides and Microsoft PowerPoint, for preparing a visual presentation.
- Identifying appropriate use cases for utilizing AI-generated information and articulate the benefits and risks involved in these contexts.
