BASM 332 - Human Resources and the Manager

Course Description: Explores the role that the human resource function and the manager play to achieve high levels of organizational performance. Evaluate the organizational impact related to the following areas of human resources: talent acquisition and talent management; total rewards (compensation and benefits); evaluating and managing employee performance; and health, safety, and security.

Prerequisite: BASM Dept. Chair permission.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Analyze the importance of HR as a central management function and influence on organizational culture and managing human resources as a critical competency for all managers by researching workplace application and practice in student’s field of interest.  
  2. Identify the legal and regulatory principles that govern the American workplace by researching their application in student’s field of interest.  
  3. Analyze major HR functions (e.g., organizational effectiveness strategy, talent recruitment, selection and development and managing poor performance) through case-study based critique and analysis and application in student’s field of interest.  
  4. Evaluate the impact of bias on the manager and organizational effectiveness by researching their impact in student’s chosen field of interest.

Course Contents
  1. 1. Human resource management as a field of study, as a central management function, and as a key accountability for all managers.
  2. Implications for human resource management of the behavioral sciences, government regulations, and court decisions.
  3. Elements of the HR function (e.g. recruitment, selection, training and development, etc.) and be familiar with each element’s key concepts & terminology.
  4. The role of human resources in creation of an organizational culture that support both human well-being and successful performance at individual, team, unit, and organizational levels.
  5. Principles and techniques of human resource management gained through the discussion of major personnel issues and the solution of typical case problems.
