MT 241 - Outboard Motors II

Course Description: Focuses on modern outboard service, installation, and advanced troubleshooting techniques. Includes contemporary outboard fuel systems, electronic engine control and monitoring, diagnostic tools and software, new outboard rigging, and performing sea trials. Also includes a unit on sterndrive and saildrive installation, maintenance, and repair.

Prerequisite: MT 240 with a D or higher.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Safely remove and install large outboard motors using proper lifting equipment and recommended procedures.
  2. Perform advanced maintenance procedures on outboard engines, including fuel delivery testing, valve adjustments, and engine ignition timing according to manufacturer specifications.
  3. Utilize modern diagnostic tools and software to interpret error codes and troubleshoot engine problems.
  4. Install, test, and repair outboard shift and throttle controls, steering systems, wiring harnesses, and instrumentation.
  5. Perform basic service procedures on sterndrives, including removal/installation, seal testing and repair, shaft alignment, and bearing replacement.

  1. Fundamentals of modern outboard technology, operation, and service.
  2. Large outboard mounting procedures, tools, and techniques.
  3. Electronic fuel injection (EFI) theory, maintenance, and repair.
  4. Advanced outboard maintenance procedures: fuel pressure and injector testing, ignition timing, valve adjustments, and cylinder leak-down testing.
  5. Advanced outboard electrical troubleshooting techniques using diagnostic equipment and software.
  6. New outboard repowering considerations and rigging procedures.
  7. Steering and control systems: mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic.
  8. Trim/tilt service, repair, and troubleshooting.
  9. Sterndrive and saildrive identification, maintenance, and repair procedures.
  10. Pod drive theory, considerations, and basic service techniques.
