Course Description: Application of professional skills in abstracting medical records and assigning appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes for data retrieval and claims processing in outpatient health care settings.
Prerequisite: AHE 106 and AHE 110 with a C or higher. Concurrent enrollment in AHE 221 required. Strongly Recommended: Special Requirements:

Student Learning Outcomes
- Apply the official ICD-10-CM coding guidelines.
- Describe how the correct coding process uses both the ICD-10-CM coding manual Alphabetic Index and Tabular List in the selection of proper diagnosis codes.
- Evaluate medical record documentation and properly assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes utilizing the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting (OGCR), Chapter Specific Guidelines, and conventions in the ICD-10-CM coding manual.
- Describe the specific sequencing rule that is followed when multiple diagnoses are documented.
- Apply diagnostic coding sequencing rules to various coding situations: two or more principal diagnoses, treatment plan not carried out, complications, uncertain diagnoses, and acute and chronic conditions.
- Explain the rules governing the coding of the sequelae (late effects) of previous diseases and conditions.
- Evaluate medical record documentation and properly assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes from operative reports, ancillary orders, and provider visits.
- Coordinate and integrate use of the ICD-10-CM coding system in a variety of settings (inpatient, ambulatory, diagnostic, emergency department).
