AHE 230 - Advanced Outpatient Coding and Auditing

Course Description: Advanced application of the principles of diagnostic and procedural coding and auditing practice using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes in coding exercises and abstracted medical records in various healthcare settings.

Prerequisite: AHE 221 and AHE 222 with a C or higher. Concurrent enrollment in AHE 240 required.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Follow current established guidelines in outpatient diagnostic code assignment.
  2. Apply outpatient procedure and diagnosis codes using patient charts.
  3. Validate coding accuracy using clinical information found in patient record. 
  4. Using audit forms, review assigned CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes on patient records and resolving any discrepancies.
  5. Provide rationale for any coding changes based on supporting documentation.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency in coding in hospital outpatient and clinic services, physician practice encounters, home health services, and long-term care.
  7. Critique a variety of coding systems, including CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10, as well as DRG.

Course Contents
  1. CPT Evaluation and Management (E/M) coding in various patient settings.
  2. CPT coding for Anesthesia, General Surgery, Pathology and Laboratory, Radiology and Medicine.
  3. ICD-10-CM coding per body system.
