CCBS 024 - Computer Basics

Course Description: Introduction to basic computer skills taught in Spanish for CCB or HSC students who are novice computer users. Through a hands-on approach, understand common computer terms, develop navigation skills with the keyboard and mouse, manage electronic files, send and receive email, locate information on the worldwide web, and explore e-learning tools. Basic reading and writing will be taught in the context of using a personal computer.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Manage files and folders in local storage by using techniques such as creating, formatting, saving, moving, copying, searching, and backing up.
  2. Navigate standard computer utility functions by using applications such as camera, file manager, screenshot, basic graphic and text editors.
  3. Retrieve information from the internet by using web browsers and popular search engines.
  4. Use academic and professional discourse to communicate through electronic tools such as learning management system, MySVC email account, and video conferencing.

Course Contents
  1. Identifying common computer terms.
  2. Using basic operating system applications, such as camera, file explorer, screenshot, snipping tool, paint, and notepad.
  3. Using web browser(s) and popular search engine(s) to locate and retrieve information from the internet.
  4. Managing files and folders in local and cloud storage(s) such as Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive.
  5. Communicating through the MySVC e-mail account by managing messages and attachments.
  6. Set up a personal email account (for students who don’t already have one).
  7. Set up a printing FOB in the college library to allow students to print on campus.
  8. Using e-learning tools available through a learning management system such as Canvas.
  9. Using features available through popular video conferencing tools, such as Zoom, for effective communication and collaboration.
  10. Developing typing skills by focusing on speed and accuracy while typing paragraphs of average difficulty.
