Course Description: Continuation of topics related to the art and science of preventing dental disease. Accentuates application of motivational interviewing to improve oral health, and work with patients who use tobacco or have substance use disorders.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dental Therapy (DT) coursework from previous quarter.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Differentiate between the use of tobacco in Native American ceremony and as a substance use disorder (SUD).
  2. Explain the prevalence of addiction in the US and in different populations.
  3. Explain biological, psychological, and social determinants of addiction.
  4. Discuss the impact of substance use disorders on individuals, families, and communities.
  5. Describe signs and symptoms of substance use disorders on general and oral health.
  6. Identify oral manifestations related to tobacco and substance use disorders (SUDs).
  7. Document oral manifestations related to tobacco and substance use disorders (SUDs).
  8. Apply motivational interviewing to provide patient-centered care.
