Course Description: Builds on earlier coursework to actively use knowledge and skills to connect with and build trust with patients. Highlights the important role of health literacy and cultural humility as well as practical applications of motivational interviewing, behavior modification techniques, and management of fear and anxiety across all patient groups with emphasis on pediatric, geriatric, and autistic patients.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dental Therapy (DT) coursework from previous quarter. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Discuss the significance of health literacy on health behaviors and health outcomes.
- Analyze readability and appropriateness of written oral health materials.
- Explain the importance of cultural humility and cultural competency when communicating with patients.
- Discuss evidence-based behavior modification strategies to provide care to mentally and/or physically challenged patients.
- Explain evidence-based strategies to prevent and mitigate behaviors associated with dental fear.
- Discuss evidence-based behavioral modification strategies to provide care to pediatric patients.
- Describe physical, cognitive, and nutritional challenges that may influence oral health of older patients.
- Apply motivational interviewing and behavior modification strategies on case studies about physically/mentally challenged, fearful/avoidant, pediatric, and geriatric patients.
