Course Description: Concepts and principles of dental anatomy, occlusion, and dental materials as they relate to permanent tooth preparation and restoration. Evidence-based practices for selection of dental materials are emphasized, as are criteria for assessing the quality of cavity preparations and tooth restorations.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dental Therapy (DT) coursework from previous quarter. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Describe dental anatomy specific to a tooth.
- Identify different caries classifications.
- Explain principles of occlusion.
- Describe the process for assessing whether a restoration is in occlusion, and steps to take if there are problems.
- Discuss evidence-based research that influence the selection of dental materials used to restore a tooth.
- Describe the criteria used to evaluate the quality of mixed restorative materials.
- Explain the implications of using improperly mixed restorative materials.
- Explain indications to protect pulp during operative procedures.
- Describe principles to prepare and restore teeth using amalgam and composite materials.
- Apply preclinical operative rubric for rating Class I, II, III, V, and non-carious cervical lesion preparations and restorations on typodonts.
- Justify when and why to refurbish, repair, or replace amalgam restorations.
