Course Description: Concepts and clinical applications to prevent, diagnose, treat, and manage periodontal disease. Topics include periodontal risk assessment, prognosis, treatment planning, recall intervals, referrals, periodontal dressings, sutures, and current advances in periodontal research.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dental Therapy (DT) coursework from previous quarter. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify defining characteristics of healthy gingiva and periodontium, and periodontal disease.
- Describe the microbiology of periodontal disease and the effect of plaque and calculus.
- Explain the impact of periodontal disease on diabetes, heart disease, low-birth weight, pregnancies, and other health conditions.
- Use medical/dental history to inform care for patients with periodontal disease.
- Diagnose periodontal disease.
- Stage and grade periodontitis to support prognosis, treatment options, recall intervals, and referrals.
- Apply evidence-based practices to prevent and treat periodontal disease.
- Place and remove periodontal dressings.
- Remove sutures.
- Discuss current trends and technologies and advances in periodontal disease research.
- Perform a dental prophylaxis (including calculus detection, measurement of periodontal pockets, scaling, and selective polishing) on a typodont and a classmate.
- Self-assess performance using preclinical rubric for dental prophylaxis.
