Course Description: Introduction to Pediatric Dentistry. Topics include anticipatory guidance, primary tooth development and anatomy, diagnosis and treatment planning children, preventive and interceptive orthodontics, preparation and placement of restorations and preformed crowns on primary teeth, indirect pulp capping, and pulpotomy procedures on primary teeth.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dental Therapy (DT) coursework from previous quarter. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Describe growth and development phases for children.
- Discuss behavior modification techniques.
- Demonstrate anticipatory guidance information to a parent/caregiver.
- Summarize primary tooth development process and anatomy.
- Discuss developmental dental anomalies associated with the pediatric population.
- Identify pediatric procedures and conditions that are within the dental scope of practice.
- Manage consultation and referrals that are beyond the dental therapy scope of practice.
- Review principles for restoring primary teeth.
- Demonstrate pulpal therapy techniques and materials on primary teeth.
- Restore primary teeth with amalgam and esthetic adhesive restorative materials.
- Demonstrate preparation and placement of stainless steel/Hall crowns.
- Restore primary teeth with amalgam and composite/glass ionomer materials.
- Synthesize techniques and dental materials to demonstrate preparation and placement of stainless steel/Hall crowns on typodont teeth.
- Discuss considerations and contraindications that impact treating special need patients.
