DT 202 - Advanced Dental Therapy Concepts II

Course Description: Review topics learned in previous courses with an emphasis on critical thinking and integrating the knowledge and skill sets into direct care scenarios. Additional topics include urgent care dentistry, simple/nonsurgical extraction of erupted teeth, characteristics of oral lesions, and managing oral surgery consultations and referrals.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dental Therapy (DT) coursework from previous quarter.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify conditions that are within the dental therapy scope of practice.
  2. Manage consultation and referral processes for procedures and conditions that are beyond the dental therapy scope of practice.
  3. Explain the importance of an accurate and current medical history.
  4. Explain the protocol for triaging patients with urgent care needs.
  5. Triage a patient with urgent care needs.
  6. Explain indications and contraindications for the use of analgesics, anti-inflammatory agents, and antibiotics.
  7. Synthesize legal requirements related to informed consent.  
  8. Explain the purpose of a sterile field.
  9. Apply infection control practices to set up for a surgical procedure.
  10. Explain surgical techniques used when extracting an erupted tooth.
  11. Extract an erupted tooth using a simulator.
  12. Instruct patient about post-operative care.
  13. Manage post-operative complications.
  14. Identify nonmalignant oral lesions from case studies.
  15. Describe characteristics of precancerous oral lesions.
  16. Explain clinical aspects of documenting suspicious lesions in dental record.
