Course Description: Review topics learned in previous courses with an emphasis on critical thinking and integrating the knowledge and skill sets into direct care scenarios. Additional topics include urgent care dentistry, simple/nonsurgical extraction of erupted teeth, characteristics of oral lesions, and managing oral surgery consultations and referrals.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dental Therapy (DT) coursework from previous quarter. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify conditions that are within the dental therapy scope of practice.
- Manage consultation and referral processes for procedures and conditions that are beyond the dental therapy scope of practice.
- Explain the importance of an accurate and current medical history.
- Explain the protocol for triaging patients with urgent care needs.
- Triage a patient with urgent care needs.
- Explain indications and contraindications for the use of analgesics, anti-inflammatory agents, and antibiotics.
- Synthesize legal requirements related to informed consent.
- Explain the purpose of a sterile field.
- Apply infection control practices to set up for a surgical procedure.
- Explain surgical techniques used when extracting an erupted tooth.
- Extract an erupted tooth using a simulator.
- Instruct patient about post-operative care.
- Manage post-operative complications.
- Identify nonmalignant oral lesions from case studies.
- Describe characteristics of precancerous oral lesions.
- Explain clinical aspects of documenting suspicious lesions in dental record.
