DT 231 - Community Oral Health Programs I

Course Description: Focuses on planning effective community based dental programs, and stresses effective and culturally appropriate communications with individuals who predominately live in rural, Native American communities. Community dental programs are developed by assessing community dental needs and by gaining community input and ownership. Emphasis is placed on using and building familiarity with other evidence-based community oral health initiatives and their effectiveness. Use elements of the POARE planning model and use SMARTER objectives as they relate to indigenous cultures. Design an oral health needs assessment and a culturally relevant community oral health promotion project.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dental Therapy (DT) coursework from previous quarter.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Describe the components of culturally competent and culturally appropriate care.
  2. Explain the rationale behind planning a comprehensive prevention program.
  3. Describe how to conduct the examination component of a Basic Screening Survey.
  4. Explain the elements of the POARE format of prevention planning with particular emphasis on development of the problem statement and evaluation methodology.
  5. Discuss the skills needed to successfully communicate and work in diverse settings and cultures.
  6. Explain the components of SMARTER objectives as they relate to an Indigenous culture.
  7. Conduct an oral health needs assessment.
  8. Develop a culturally relevant community project based on an initial need assessment, using the POARE format.
