Course Description: After successfully completing 39 competencies, students will become members of a dental healthcare team at a sponsoring dental clinic, and will continue to develop as a competent dental therapist through the synthesis, application, and interpretation of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills learned throughout the program. Evaluations and feedback will be provided to aid in growth and confidence building. Presentation of student portfolios will be scheduled during the quarter.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dental Therapy (DT) coursework from previous quarter. Meets FQE Requirement: No Integrative Experience Requirement: No
Student Learning Outcomes
- Provide examination services (radiographs, caries diagnosis, and treatment planning).
- Perform preventive services (fluoride varnish, oral hygiene instruction, sealants, toothbrush prophy and dental prophylaxis).
- Restore teeth (ART/protective restorations, amalgam and composite restorations, and stainless-steel crowns).
- Provide complex services (pulpotomy extractions).
- Deliver local anesthesia.
- Document treatment provided and associated CTC codes into patient records.
- Manage consultation and referral for procedures and conditions that are beyond the dental therapy scope of practice.
- Self-assess quality of treatment provided.
- Reconcile difference between self-assessment and supervising dentist’s feedback.
- Present exhibits from student’s portfolio to classmates and supervising dentists.
