ELA 065 - Connect II: Listening and Speaking

Course Description: ELA students with clearly defined academic goals will take an intensive course for English language learners with an emphasis on communication skills that will prepare students for ELA 75.

Prerequisite: CASAS and CaMLA testing, B- (80%) or higher in ELA 055, or permission of ELA and EAP department chairs.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Speak for understanding through partner interviews, group discussions, and presentations.
  2. Demonstrate ability to comprehend, pronounce, and define level-appropriate academic vocabulary.
  3. Use correct words stress in sentences; pronounce syllable schwa sounds; demonstrate speech melody; and clearly emphasize focus groups.
  4. Present new vocabulary, ideas, and topics.
  5. Use select media such as Microsoft PowerPoint and/or videos to give presentations on assigned topics.
  6. Take notes that correctly utilize key words, abbreviations, and symbols.
  7. Demonstrate academic listening comprehension by identifying main ideas and answering questions about assigned listening material.
  8. Engage in experiential learning projects such as participating in on-campus activities and/or the Head Start story-telling project.
  9. Demonstrate global citizenship, critical thinking, and metacognition.
