Course Description: Prepares student to recognize, respond and manage First Aid emergencies. A First Aid certificate will be awarded after successful completion of the course.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Respond to an emergency by accessing the scene, finding the problem, and calling 9-11 or Emergency Medical Services system.
- Discuss PPE, successfully remove gloves without contamination, and properly wash hands.
- Demonstrate using an epinephrine pen correctly.
- Demonstrate how to control bleeding and bandaging.
- Discuss the priority of a health care provider in a disaster emergency.
Course Contents
- Recognizing an emergency. Responding to an emergency. 911 or Emergency medical services system. Assessing the scene, finding the problem and Good Samaritan Laws. Blood, body fluids and disease transmission.
- Preparing for an emergency. Disaster preparedness. The medical crash tray or cart.
- Medical emergencies. Breathing problems (asthma). Allergic reactions. Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Stroke. Seizure.
- Injury Emergencies. External bleeding, shock. Wounds, amputations, penetrating injuries, and internal bleeding. Concussions, head neck and spine injuries. Broken bones, and sprains, splinting. Burns and electrical injuries.
- Environmental Emergencies. Bites and stings. Heat and cold related injuries. Poison emergencies.
- Requirements for emergency evacuation of a healthcare setting by participating in a mock exposure event.
